In a bold move to honour Ossett’s proud wool-trading heritage, a new “Sheep Only” lane was unveiled this morning in the heart of the town centre. Painted directly onto the Market Place, the lane features bold white markings, a sheep icon, and the words “SHEEP ONLY” — guiding a small flock through the bustling square to the delight (and mild confusion) of early visitors.
The initiative, part of a pilot scheme led by the fictional “Urban Livestock Integration Taskforce,” aims to reduce congestion and reconnect Ossett with its agricultural roots. Shepherd Wardens in high-vis jackets were on hand to guide the flock, answer questions, and pose for selfies.
Local reaction ranged from amused to amazed, with one market-goer declaring, “It’s the most Ossett thing I’ve ever seen — and I’ve seen a brass band play in a thunderstorm.”
Of course, as the date might suggest, this baa-rilliant idea is all in good fun. The sheep lane is a light-hearted April Fools celebration from Visit Ossett — a nod to our town’s quirky charm and community spirit.
